Ebook About
In this true story—a haunting saga of medical murder set in an era of steamships and gaslights—Gregg Olsen reveals one of the most unusual and disturbing criminal cases in American history. In 1911 two wealthy British heiresses, Claire and Dora Williamson, arrived at a sanitorium in the forests of the Pacific Northwest to undergo the revolutionary “fasting treatment” of Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard. It was supposed to be a holiday for the two sisters, but within a month of arriving at what the locals called Starvation Heights, the women underwent brutal treatments and were emaciated shadows of their former selves. Claire and Dora were not the first victims of Linda Hazzard, a quack doctor of extraordinary evil and greed. But as their jewelry disappeared and forged bank drafts began transferring their wealth to Hazzard’s accounts, the sisters came to learn that Hazzard would stop at nothing short of murder to achieve her ambitions.

Book Starvation Heights: A True Story of Murder and Malice in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest Review :

When I first started reading this book, my initial thought was, oh no! Two old hypochondriacs looking for “THE CURE” - because I’d bought this book, of course, I wasn’t going to give in that fast. Hard to believe but, just for the moment, I forgot to recheck who the author was (I’d had the book on my reader for awhile). Oh well, it was a stormy day outside so, nothing to lose, I kept on reading..... didn’t take very long before it had my FULL attention! The two old hypochondriacs were two very young, well off, sisters who loved each other very much. I had to remind myself all through the book that this story was a true story. Truth can be stranger than fiction to say the least. I cried for these two ladies knowing full well that one or both would die under the auspices of the sanitorium – nobody could have ever guessed what was about to happen – what had happened and what would keep on happening. What a shock this book was. Read the book in three days but could easily have read it in one day if I had let my daily commitments go. But every chance I had, I was back in the book. For a true story to be so heartbreaking and so unbelievable..... the pain and suffering caused by the sanitorium’s owners should have been punishable by death. Linda, one of the owners almost got away with it many times, over and over. So hard to believe that she almost had the law in her pocket. She had a narcissistic personality disorder and was totally delusional, she was the center of “her” world and no one else mattered – always makes me wonder how this is possible in very bright and educated people. The ending, too, was a shock for me. Linda finally got the justice she deserved. After I finished reading, I shut the book off and put my head back to think about what I’d read..... then I remembered to check the author – Greg Olsen – Yup! I should have known.. one of the best crime writers in the world. I will never forget this book!! It was really worth the read. What a book!
What a wonderful read! So many issues that have relevance today. I am left with the sense that while much has changed, much has stayed the same over the last 100 years.Mr Olsen tells the story of Linda Hazzard who fancied herself a healer though she had no formal training and did not have a degree. She called herself on osteopath and starvationist, and was on a crusade her entire life against the established medical practitioners. She believed her fasting cure was the key to good health. She built her practice around fasting, enemas, and osteopathic manipulations. She wrote books, lectured, and eventually built a sanitarium she called Wilderness Heights. The setting for her sanitarium was a little populated area called Olalla in Kitsap County Washington, West of Seattle. The problems with her treatments were that some people died! More than twenty. Her argument was that they would have died anyway, that they came to her very ill to begin with. A coincidence was that many were wealthy folks who were missing assets after their deaths, which stunned survivors learned had been given to Linda Hazzard. Many even had her appointed their executor or guardian before their demise, under somewhat shady circumstances! Most of the story revolves around the case of two independently wealthy sisters from the UK. The Williamson sisters. One died, the other barely survived. This story contains elements of the religious fervor with which people hold to regimens that are likely to harm or do nothing except drain their pocketbooks because they are considered "natural". Seemingly intelligent people are lead down a path which destroys rather than enhances their health. There is almost a cult following when it comes to dietary measures, then and now. I think of Dr. Oz, The Food Babe, Suzanne Summers, Jenny McArthy, and countless others who are charismatic, firmly believe their righteous truths, and lead scores of followers who demean any who question their leaders. There is also a hint of the anti-science fervor we have seen recently in the US.The story is well told, well written. My tiny criticism is interspersed sections from discovered letters or interviews which I found confusing to integrate. Otherwise I think this is a great story revealing unknown history which is sensational, and has current relevance as we continue to debate what methods of healing and which dietary regimens are most relevant today. I have skin in the game as a physician and nutritionist myself. My advice? Let the buyer beware!
