This is the seventh Leaphorn and Chee novel Tony Hillerman penned. The first three, The Blessing Way(#1), Dance Hall of the Dead(#2), and Listening Woman(#3), were Leaphorn stand alones and the forth, People of Darkness, first introduced Chee as a lead. The Dark Wind(#5) and The Ghostway(#6) continue with Chee operating solo. It is not until this novel, Skinwalkers(#7), that Leaphorn and Chee finally join up. As the book opens reality comes crashing in on Jim as three shotgun blasts tear thru the wall of his trailer shredding the bed that he was in minutes ago until a feral cat he had befriended began acting strangely and woke him up. He has been distracted by the split with his girlfriend who has left town and seems to be doing her best to keep distancing herself from Jim, who is obsessed by the whole affair. On this subject he may be a sap, but he's our sap.Meanwhile Joe Leaphorn is puzzled by a string of unusual homicides that don't fit the normal rez pattern. His wife is impacted by a debilitating disease that will only get worse until it finally kills her. To say Leaphorn is heartsick hardly does him justice.Coincidences are allowed in fiction as in real life and wouldn't you know it the two cases gradually converge and Joe Leaphorn might just have to decide that his opinion of Jim Chee as an undisciplined flake was a bit harsh and Chee might decide that Leaphorn isn't quite as much the severe drone as he had thought. Who knows, if they keep this up they may even end up as friends, might take a few more books before they reach that point though.What isn't in doubt is that you get a full dose of Tony Hillerman's mellow southwest vibe combined with likable characters tied together with solid writing. Of the eighteen Chee/Leaphorn novels that Hillerman wrote before he died in 2008 this is one of the half dozen I continue to reread every few years. This wonderfully delightful book takes you into the Navajo view of life, the earth and the way.. Leaphorn is suffering seeing his wife slip mentally but continues to methodically sort out clues as they come. The mesa weather even interacts in this story and helps one understand colors, clouds, rain and the roads in this Indian land. The simple life they lead is extraordinary and peaceful. The two policeman who are friends are lead through a complicated maze of spiritual religious riddles that ends up getting both of them almost killed. The plot comes to a knife edge that makes one wonder about many of the issues of the Navajo! The author like no other can transport you to another culture, life and people group here in America!
